Department of Fisheries Production and Management

Currently, this is the only Department which founded for the purpose of developing fishery industry and became the highest institution of vocational education in Taiwan. Due to the excellent geological site, surrounded by abundant marine fisheries resources, southern Taiwan has always been the well developed fishery region. Especially Kaohsiung City is the base of the far sea fisheries, with annual catches more than 60% of the nation's total annual catches.  Under the background of this era, the establishment of the department has its special profound mission and significance.

The Department was established when the school was founded in 1964. It had gone through several re-names and re-organizations. In 2004 academic year, it was renamed as Department of Fisheries Production and Management. Meanwhile, the department modified its courses and teaching contents when it was needed to meet the development of the fisheries and the progressing era. Course design was based on the government policy of  "Ocean-Established Nation". It actively cultivates professionals and managers in the fields of fishery production technology, marine biological resources utilization, business administration and management, and recreational fisheries, etc. 

Currently, the major professional courses include Biology, Oceanography, Ecology, Fishing Gear, Seamanship, Fishery Information Technique, Fishery Resources, Fisheries Oceanography, Fisheries Economics, Marine Laws, Fishing Laws and Regulations, Fishing Administration and Management, International Fishery Management and Practice, Introduction to Recreational Fisheries, Marine Ranching, Marketing of Marine Products, etc. Both theoretical and practical skills are offered throughout the course of studies for enabling students to be ready for their career as soon as they graduated. In the 2004 academic year, the department established a graduate school in respond to the expectation of the department and the university in cultivating higher level of professional of the fisheries.

The Department of Fisheries Production and Management is cooperated with Far Sea Fisheries Development Center, Fishery Division of Agricultural Committee, and Administrative Yuan of Taiwan government. Continuing Education Training classes are offered for the students and fishermen. Students of this department are allowed to board the Center's Fishery Training ship for ocean practices. In addition, the department has academic cooperation with Australia Maritime College (AMC). Thus it has signed an agreement with AMC Fishery Department and AMC Ocean Environment Department for becoming 'sister department'. Faculty members of the two Departments from Australia are invited to this department for lecturing.
